Vision of teaching and learning

A FEB education aims to prepare students for successful entrepreneurial endeavours and careers in the corporate world, in national and international public policy-making, or in research. To achieve this the FEB offers high-quality, research-based degree programmes in the fields of both economics and business, and from bachelor to PhD.

Research-based and research-oriented education

FEB strives towards a mutual interaction between research and education; teaching is informed by research, and research is informed by teaching. The teaching is driven by active researchers who enjoy an excellent reputation in their respective domains. In this way FEB aims to create a stimulating learning environment, a positive attitude towards life-long learning and a passionate research attitude. The latter implies that in order to be able to operate in a professional, critical and constructive manner in a business context, students must develop the ability to independently formulate a relevant, expert and well-reasoned point of view. In addition to the focus on critical reflection, a great deal of attention is paid to analytic and synthetic skills.

Education, development and immersion

Alongside the focus on research-based education and the development of analytic skills, FEB places great importance on entrepreneurship and on management skills. Therefore, FEB complements its study programmes with a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities intended to develop professional skills. A focus on immersion in real business, corporate or management environments completes the FEB’s educational concept. Apart from skill development, an additional benefit of the immersion element is that students can relate to a concrete and realistic impression of their future professional self. The latter has been proven to be a strongly motivating factor in the learning process.

Specialisation, integration and broadening

The FEB programme portfolio aims at allowing students to specialise in one or more (sub)domains of economics, business economics, business administration and management. Aside from more general programmes, it offers specialised programmes that educate students towards specific professions or respond to a specific societal need. Moreover, FEB explicitly focuses on interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity, supplementing the study of business economics with a considerable input from other disciplines, including the sciences and engineering sciences. Finally, FEB aims to offer broadening study programmes, which target students who have attained a degree in a field of study other than that of (business) economics, providing them with a thorough understanding of the use of economic paradigms in policy decisions, management or international business.

International orientation

Internationalisation is essential in all aspects of FEB education: in stimulating inward and outward mobility within an excellent network of exchange partners worldwide; in the explicit international orientation of course content; in benchmarking its programmes against best practices, major trends and significant innovations in similar programmes worldwide; and above all in the global mindset of its staff and students.

Partners in teaching and learning

Students, lecturers and teaching support staff are engaged in an ongoing dialogue, each taking responsibility and contributing to the process of teaching and learning. Students take on the responsibility for their own learning process. They construct knowledge, gain insights, learn to identify and address issues, develop skills and attitudes and integrate these into competences that they put to the test in their everyday world.

Drawing on their participation in groundbreaking research, their educational expertise and their contributions to society, lecturers and educational support staff are the architects of the learning environment. They provide disciplinary, methodological and ethical building blocks, they introduce students to research and innovative applications and encourage them to participate in these, and they provide guidance to students as they acquire an understanding of the complexity of the world and develop the competences needed to act in it.

On the basis of their specific expertise, teaching support staff members offer effective administrative, educational and technical support to teaching and learning. In this way, they contribute to the creation of a stimulating learning environment and support the teaching and learning process within an adequate infrastructure.

FEB has put in place an effective organizational structure that ensures the achievement of its goals and that fosters the dialogue between all stakeholders in teaching and learning. Within this structure, an educational framework has been developed that encourages innovation, dynamism and quality, while valuing subsidiarity and acknowledging the specificity and individual profile of each programme and campus.

Ethics, responsibility and sustainability

Consistent with the identity and mission of KU Leuven, the FEB endorses and advocates the values of human rights, social justice, sustainability and respect for diversity in individuals, communities and ideas. In addition to operating within a governance culture of openness and trust that respects the input and concerns of students and all stakeholders, FEB explicitly educates students to become committed and responsible citizens, who recognize and take into account the complex economic, societal, political, and environmental context within which they will operate as entrepreneurs, managers, researchers, politicians or policy advisors. To this end, it offers study programmes within a broad ethical, cultural and social framework. FEB programmes involve reflection on values, participation in society and openness for the world.
