Master of Science (MSc) in Actuarial and Financial Engineering

1. Basic admission requirement

  • Specific Flemish bachelor's degrees or degree deemed equivalent to the required Flemish degrees

Assessment of a (foreign) degree

  • Equivalence with required Flemish degree(s) will be based on the assessment of the foreign degree, primarily with respect to the following: students are expected to have good analytical skills (i.e. solid mathematical background) and this offers a reasonable foundation for the course work. For more information regarding the prerequisites see here. Students with a lack of Economics knowledge may begin with the master via a Preparatory programme.

2. Proficiency in English

Required proof of English language proficiency (certificate)

  • TOEFL: iBT 94 (minimum subscore per item 20)
  • IELTS: 7.0 (minimum subscore per item 6.5)
  • Applicants who obtained an IELTS of 6.5 (minimum subscores 6.0) or a TOEFL of 90 (minimum subscores 20 out of 30) and have afterwards completed at least 1 year of full-time study in higher education in the English language, may also be considered for admission.

  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): overall score 180

  • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)

Exemptions from certificate English language proficiency

  • Students who obtained their secondary education degree or higher education degree in one of the following countries: Australia, English speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States of America (the certified degree and transcripts suffice, provided they confirm that the entire study was completed in English).
  • Students with a Flemish secondary education diploma and/or a Flemish academic bachelor/master

Students who completed their studies in a satellite campus which is located in another country than the main campus of the university are not eligible for an exemption from the English language proficiency certificate

Exemptions from additional requirements

  • Applicants with an academic bachelor’s/master’s degree from a Belgian university.
  • Applicants who completed an exchange programme at our KU Leuven Faculty of Economics and Business and obtained good results can be potentially exempted as well; they need to contact the faculty and request a waiver based on their transcript of records.
