Romero day 2022: What's the deal with Vaccine Inequity?

We have seen unprecedented developments in vaccine development, but equitable vaccine access and distribution continues to be a challenge and a major point of contention during the COVID-19 pandemic. This event addresses this issue in two ways: (i) bring the audience up to speed on the latest developments and challenges facing global vaccine distribution; and (ii) inviting a transdisciplinary audience of researchers and the public to tackle the questions in a group discussion.

ATM Updates 

 

KU Leuven and the Institut Pasteur of Dakar join forces for local vaccine production in Africa.  

May 30, 2023​​​​

Currently, only a meagre 1% of the vaccines needed for Africa are produced locally. The ambition is to raise this number to 60% by 2040. Together, KU Leuven and the Institut Pasteur of Dakar are working to overcome several significant challenges, including the need for continuous cooling, time-consuming methods for certain blood analyses in clinical studies, and the lack of vaccines against several deadly tropical diseases. During the Belgian Economic Mission, the joint project was presented to, among others, Princess Astrid of Belgium and Hadja Lahbib, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Nico Vandaele joined discussions at the BSMA

November 1, 2022

Nico Vandaele, representing the Access-To-Medicines Research Centre, joined the discussions on how to build a resilient supply chain for a self-reliant continent of Africa at the BSMA (www.bsmaafrica.com) Summit in Kigali, Rwanda on Oct 31 – Nov 1. Medical science and supply chain professionals came together to focus on healthcare supply in a holistic, end to end manner. In addition, a pioneering group of 13 academicians assembled after the Summit to deliberate how the challenges of delivering world-class health care to all the citizens could be met and to promote education, training and human development.

Catherine Decouttere and Nico Vandaele sharing visions and thoughts in todays’ meeting with Peter Piot, Heidi Larson and Luc Debruyne. Concluded that the world is in high need of system models and support for the challenging health issues of the future.

 

CARE Annual Meeting

June, 2022

CARE held its first in person annual meeting in June 2022, in Paris, France. It was attended by around 60 people in person, with 40 people joining remotely. Besides CARE colleagues, the event was also attended by the Scientific and Ethics Advisory Board (SEAB) and IHI Project Officer (PO) Oussama Karroum. Catherine Decouttere, Carla Van Riet, Grace Beirne, Lise Boey and Nico Vandaele; represented the Access-To-Medicines Research Centre.
